Canopy Table

Description

The Canopy live edge slab table is made from rimu, a New Zealand native tree, rescued from a river on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. This sustainable timber, naturally felled by nature, is preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them. We rescue these trees and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art. The river rescued trees have been carbon dated at over 1500 years old.

The Canopy table was inspired by a walk through the New Zealand native forest, looking up to the tree canopy observing the tree trunks and branches. Canopy is a design metaphor of the tree itself. Each leg is a trunk with branches that create their own unique spatial geometry with positive and negative spaces. Moving around the table is a true three-dimensional experience where the legs represent the trunks and branches of the trees, and visually interact just like a canopy in the forest.

Canopy is also a testament to the craftsmanship of Mother Nature and the craftsmen at Tréology. We wanted the timber to tell its own story and a base that added to the narrative.

The trees’ location co-ordinates are inscribed on a stainless steel Tréology tag and attached to the table, connecting the owner to a unique piece of New Zealand nature. The Canopy table is finished with hand rubbed, low V.O.C., natural plant oils to bring the stunning grain to life.
